Opposition Congress today said the BJP government in Gujarat has displayed its "dictatorial tendency" by making voting mandatory during elections to local self governing bodies.

"The state government has displayed its dictatorial attitude by notifying compulsory Voting Act which they had passed in the state Assembly where they have absolute majority," Gujarat Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi said.

He said making voting mandatory will be a burden on people as in democracy people also have the right not to vote. "They have gone against the basic principals of democracy," Doshi added.

"The decision taken by the state government is a gimmick as people are going to reject them in the local bodies polls to be held in October as they have failed to perform," Doshi said.

The notification to make voting compulsory in elections to local self governing bodies was issued by the state government today.

The notification would mean that people have to compulsorily vote from now onwards during elections held for municipal corporations, municipalities, and all village panchayats.
