The activists of BJP's trade cell today staged a sit-in outside the Bhawanipore police station here after they were denied permission to hold a rally against the 'forcefull shutdown' of shops after Madan Mitra's arrest.

Shops in an around Bhawanipore and Jadubabur Bazar were closed by supporters of Madan Mitra, who is a resident of the Bhawanipore area, after he was arrested by the CBI in the Saradha scam.

"We were earlier given permission to hold a rally here against goodanism of TMC activists on shopkeepers of the area. We were also planning to protest against the forceful shutdown of shops in the area after the arrest of Madan Mitra on Friday," Harider Rai, a leader of BJP trade cell, said.

DC (South) Murlidhar Sharma said that the trade cell had not taken any prior permission to hold a rally.

"They merely sent a letter a few days back saying that they will hold the rally. They assumed that by sending a letter they have taken the permission. But we didn't give any permission. Today they came here to give a deputation," Sharma told PTI.
