The BJP today urged the State Election Commission to ensure that all candidates for the panchayat polls in West Bengal were able to file nominations peacefully.

Claiming that hundreds of party workers were injured in violence on the eve of filing nominations and thousands threatened, BJP president Rahul Sinha in a letter to state election commissioner Mira Pandey said "Kindly see that all the aspiring candidates can submit their nomination and take stern action against erring leaders and workers."

Sinha said "it is also to your knowledge that most of the incidents took place before the respective BDO offices."

He demanded counters be opened at DM and SDO offices also to allow contestants to submit their nominations.

Sinha urged the commissioner to extend the last date of filing nomination for the first phase of polls by two days to June 7.
