Press Trust of India New Delhi
The Congress today accused the BJP of using polarisation as a "tool" when it loses on all other fronts.

Speaking to reporters here, Congress leader Pramod Tiwari said his party does not believe in the politics of polarisation and makes efforts to ensure it does not happen.

"Polarisation is a tool used by the BJP after it loses on all other fronts," he said.

The Congress leader, however, evaded a question on his party's chief minister in Karnataka Siddharamaiah raising the 2002 Godhra riots issue ahead of elections in the state, saying he was not aware of the speech as he was in Parliament.

He said Karnataka has been a "model state" even if one looks at the data provided by the Centre, and contradicted the figures cited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his speech yesterday.

"If there is any model state, it is Karnataka," he said.

Tiwari also criticised the use of force by the police in eliminating criminals during encounters and said force should be used to arrest a criminal as allowed under the law.

The Congress leader also lamented what he called the emergence of a new trend wherein policemen get rewards and promotions on the basis of killings criminals in encounters.
