Newly elected BJP Maharashtra unit president Devendra Fadnavis today said the party would try to consolidate all anti-Congress parties on one platform and work for addressing the problems of common man.

BJP, the main Opposition in Maharashtra which has been out of power since 1999, today officially announced Devendra Fadnavis, 43, as the state unit president.

"The post of party president is not just for fame, but it is a very responsible post. I want to fulfil expectations of my leaders and party workers," Fadnavis, who belongs to Nagpur, told reporters here.

"BJP will try to bring all anti-Congress parties on one platform in Maharashtra. My first priority will be to launch a campaign against Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar (over his recent controversial remarks) and take aggressive action on problems related to common man," he added.

To a question, he said the decision regarding "an alliance with Raj Thackeray's MNS will be taken by the party's central leadership."

"I will try to work as per the party's senior leaders' directions," he added.

He said the party will start a statewide movement against the state Congress government.

The BJP's focus would be on the next general elections and the party would try to fulfil exceptions of common man, he added.

Fadnavis has the distinction of becoming second youngest Mayor in the country when he served as the Mayor of Nagpur. He is also the only person to be re-elected and serve as the first 'Mayor in Council' of Maharashtra.

Fadnavis, known for his oratory, has also been the general secretary of the BJP in Maharashtra.
