A blaze destroyed more than 40 public buses at a depot in southern Mexico today as authorities investigated whether it was an act of arson.

No injuries were reported in the pre-dawn inferno in the southern city of Villahermosa, Tabasco state authorities said.

The public security department said it received an emergency call at 3:30 am and that firefighters put out the blaze.

The state prosecutor's office was in charge of the investigation. A government official told AFP that authorities "believe that it could have been an intentional fire."

The blaze disrupted bus service in Villahermosa, a city of 640,000 people, as two central routes were shut down due to the incident.
