The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), country's richest civic body, today announced a Diwali bonus to its employees, ranging from Rs 2,250 to Rs 14,500.

This year's maximum bonus amount is Rs 500 more than the last year's, which was Rs 14,000, an official release said.

Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar had called a special meeting on bonus issue.

There was talk that the civic body, which has suffered a financial setback owing to abolition of octroi after the roll-out of the Goods and Services Tax, may not give bonus to its employees this year.

Employee representatives were demanding bonus up to 40 per cent of the salary.

The bonus will put additional burden of Rs 160.30 crore on the corporation.
