BMC goes hitech to fix RFID tags on bio-medical equipments

In a bid to keep track of bio-medical equipments in different civic run hospitals and dispensaries, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to fix RFID tags to such appliances.

RFID tagging is more authentic and will help authorities in tracking the equipments, a release issued by the civic body said here today.

The civic run hospitals and dispensaries have bio-medical electronic equipments like doppler machines, ECG, ultrasound, X-ray, scanning machines, MRI equipment, anaesthesia appliances in large numbers, it said.

"Once the equipments gets tagged with RFID system, it will be easy to maintain, locate, relocate them. Also, the medical authorities will be in a position to use it conveniently, because all the data would be at one place," said an official.
 

He added that the tendering process to implement this system is in the last leg.

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) tagging is a system that uses small radio frequency identification devices for tracking and identification purposes.

The official said, "Almost 15,000 bio-medical equipments will be tagged with RFID. After tagging, authorities will be in a position to know the hospital in which it is placed, name of the department, among other things.
