Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today condoled the death of 10 persons in a boat tragedy and directed the authorities to immediately release ex-gratia of 4 lakh each to the next of kin.
"Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today expressed grief over the loss of life in the tragic incident of boat capsize in Sabon River at Joriabeel in Goalpara district on Sunday evening," an official release said.
The chief minister directed the deputy commissioner of Goalpara to immediately release 4 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased and take all measures for safety of the boat passengers of the area, it added.
About 50 people from the district in four small boats were returning home after witnessing a boat race in Sabon river when their boats capsized during a storm at Joriabeel on Sunday evening.
According to the authorities, 10 persons, mostly children, drowned.
