Bodies of 16 Andaman boat mishap victims arrive in Chennai

The bodies of 16 Andaman and Nicobar Islands boat mishap victims, hailing from Tamil Nadu, were brought here today by three flights, in which 15 survivors from the state also returned home.

However, the body of one person, Suresh Shaw, who drowned after rescuing his three-year old girl child is yet to be traced.

The post-mortem was done at a hospital in Andamans, officials in Kanchipuram district, from where most of the victims hailed, said.

Twenty-two persons drowned when tourist boat "Aqua Marine" capsized in the sea near Port Blair yesterday. The boat with 45 tourists on-board capsized between Ross Island and North Bay near Port Blair in Andaman.
 

Thirty-two of those on board were from Tamil Nadu. Of the 22 dead, 15 were from Kanchipuram, two from Chennai.

The state government had deputed two senior officials to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to handle the situation.

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa announced a solatium of Rs one lakh each for the kin of victims and arranged for survivors to return home by flight. Arrangements were also made to bring the bodies back home.
