The body of a polling official, who went missing on April 9 from Siine Village of East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh, was recovered from a gorge, police said today.

"Police recovered the body of Mathew Dabi from a gorge near the village yesterday," East Siang SP D Arya said in a statement.

The cause of the death could only be ascertained after postmortem, he said.

Dabi's wife has appealed to the authorities to constitute a team of doctors to conduct postmortem as he died under mysterious circumstance.

The Galo Students Union (GSU) has questioned the district police for delay in starting the search operation and alleged that precious time was lost before the district administration started search operation from April 15 last.

While questioning the role of the presiding officer, GSU criticized the poll officials who accompanied Dabi for not allegedly responding immediately to the situation and putting no effort to locate Dabi even though he went missing as the polling process was in progress.

No missing report was lodged with the Boleng Police by the polling team even as the team left Siine without Dabi, police said.
