Bollywood director Kamal K M gets Gollapudi award

Director Kamal K M has been selected for this year's Gollapudi Srinivas National Award for the Best Debut film for his thriller "ID"

Kamal was selected from among 20 nominations of debut directors in several languages including Hindi, Malayalam, English, Tamil, Marathi and Kannada.

Gollapudi Srinivas Memorial Award, into its 16th year, has been instituted by city-based Gollapudi Memorial Foundation in memory of Gollapudi Srinivas, who died in 1992 while shooting his first film at the age of 26.

The award, which seeks to promote young filmmakers, carries a cash prize of Rs 1.50 lakh and a memento and would be presented to Kamal on August 12, the day when Srinivas died in an accident, a foundation release said.
 

"ID", produced on a shoe-string budget by Collective Phase One Ltd, received top honours at the Abu Dhabi International Film festival, Torino International Film Festival and Mumbai International Film Festival, it said.

Past winners of the award include Aamir Khan for his directorial venture "Taare Zameen Par" and Anusha Rizvi for "Peepli Live".

The selection jury consisted of noted film director Singeetham Srinivasa Rao, veteran filmmaker Balu Mahendra, film editor A Sreekar Prasad and actress Kushboo, the release added.
