As many as 56 persons, including 10 children from various places of Tamil Nadu, were today rescued from a brick kiln, where they were working as bonded labourers for the last several years, police said.

They had taken advance from the factory owner to work. However, they were compelled to work for 12 to 14 hours daily without holidays.

The owner of the factory had recently denied permission to some of the workers to go to their native places, following which they escaped and lodged complaint to Thanjavur District Collector.

After conducting an inquiry, district administration officials along with police visited the factory and rescued all of them, including 23 women.
