Two months after the only tiger of the Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary in South Goa died, the state government has began scouting for new pair of feline in three facilities in exchange of a pair Indian bison or deers.

The Bondla zoo, located in Ponda taluka, nearly 40-km from here, had a pair of tigers - Sandhya and Rana. While Rana died in December 2016, Sandhya expired in July this year.

Deputy Conservator of Forest (Wildlife), Vikas Desai said the forest department has approached Dr Shivaram Karnath Biological Park, Mangaluru, Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, popularly known as Mysuru zoo, and another zoo in Bangalore to look for new pair of tigers in exchange of either a pair of Indian bison (gaur) or deers.

"We have started the process after getting an approval from the Central Zoo Authority. The offers are made. We are waiting for the response from any of them (the three zoos)," Desai said.

Rana and Sandhya were brought to Bondla from Indira Gandhi Zoological Park, Vishakhapatnam in 2009.
