Four days after a child died due to falling into a borewell, the police today registered a case of death caused by negligence against the borewell owner.

On May 1, four-year-old Sunil More was rescued from the 200 ft borewell at Mandanwan village near Shirur, about 63 kms from here, but he died on the way to hospital.

The Shirur police, who were investigating the incident, registered a case against borewell owner Navnath Shitole (55) under section 304 (a) (death caused by negligence) of IPC.

On Saturday, Sunil, the son of a labourer couple, slipped into the open borewell while playing in the village. It took 31 hours for the NDRF and fire brigade to rescue the boy from the borewell. However, the boy died on the way to hospital.

"The suspect, bore owner had dug the borewell in his farm a day before the incident. However, he did not take any precautions and safety measures and left the borewell open which led to the mishap," sub-inspector Somnath Waghmode, of Shirur Police Station said.
