A string of theme-based gardens showcasing the spirit of traditional games, natural resources and the beauty of Kerala, will adorn the Games Village for the 35th National Games to be held here next year.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanical Garden and Research Institute (JNTBGRI), a R&D centre located at Palode near here, will be doing the landscaping of the Games Village, being readied at Menamkilam.

The National Games Organising Committee has approved the proposal of the JNTBGRI and sanctioned Rs 50 Lakh for the beautification work, an official release said here today.

The landscaping and developing the gardens at the Games Village will be based on 12 themes developed by JNTBGRI. The themes will showcase the spirit of traditional games, natural resources and the beauty of Kerala, it said.

At the entrance of the Village, the landscaping will emphasize the concept 'India ahead - the spirit of sports'.

The themes of various gardens are related to cultural arts, traditional games of Kerala, the natural habitat, boat races, tribal habitat and driftwood collections.

"The highlight of these will be the medical, spice and bamboo gardens that will be a source of valuable information. The plants will have detailed identifying boards with relevant information displayed for easy understanding," the release said.

Amidst the greenery, there will also be sculptures made from eco-friendly materials highlighting these concepts.

The Botanical Garden authorities are targeting to complete the work by January next, officials said.
