A 15-year-old student of a government-run residential school for tribal boys allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in Bastar district, about 210 kms from here, police said today.

Bastar Collector Anbalgan P has ordered a probe into the incident and suspended the school superintendent, Chavidhar Kachh, for dereliction of duty.

"Surendra Madiya, a student of class V, was found hanging from the ceiling of his room on March 26 late night at the Mirthum Ashram school (residential school), under Kodenar police station limits of the district," Kodenar Station House Officer (SHO) R C Lahri told PTI.

"The superintendent of the residential school was out of the campus to celebrate Holi at the time of incident," he said.

"According to a statement given by the deceased's fellow inmates, Surendra and his few friends had gone out of the campus to consume 'Salfi' (a local brewed intoxicant) on Tuesday evening.

"They were in an inebriated condition when they returned, so their friends helped them to their room. After a few hours, Surendra was discovered hanging," he added.

A case has been registered in this connection, he added.

"The cause behind the incident could be ascertained only after the postmortem. However, a probe has been ordered from my side while police are also investigating," Collector Anbalgan said.

"The superintendent of the residential school has been suspended in this connection," he added.
