A nine-year-old tribal boy was killed in wall collapse today while normal life was affected in several parts of the city due to water-logging caused by incessant rains since last night, officials said.

The boy, Sahil Puty, was killed when a boundary wall collapsed in Adel Jhopri area near here as low lying areas like Naya bustee, Sidhu-Kanhu Bustee, Shivnagar, Ganeshnagar were submerged.

A snake bite case was also reported from Bagbera but the victim survived and in hospital.

Dalbhum SDO Suraj Kumar told PTI that East Singhbhum district has taken adequate steps to meet any eventuality.

Water-logging was also reported from areas including Kadma, Mango, Bagbera and administration was engaged to pump out the water, he said.

The administration was also keeping a tab on the water level of rivers Kharkhai and Swarnarekha, which are flowing below the danger level now.

However, the level could go up if sluice gates from adjoining Mayurbhanj district of Odisha are opened.

The administration was in constant touch with its Odisha counterpart in this regard and appealed them to inform the local administration at least 10/12 hours before the sluice gates are opened, the SDO said.

"We could shift people living in low-lying areas if the Odisha government apprises us about its decision to open the sluice gates beforehand," Kumar said.

The steel city and its surrounding areas have registered 219.4 mm of rainfall during the last 24 hours.
