A six-year-old boy was drowned in a water-filled pit, which was dug out months ago to construct a structure over an existing giant idol of Lord Hanuman in Rupnagar locality here.

The victim, Somu Mahali, who went out for playing yesterday, was drowned in the four-feet deep pit, which was water-logged owing to the rains lashing the city for last two days.

A group of children, who were playing near the pit, spotted the body only in the evening and alarmed the elders, who rushed to the spot and recovered the body, police said.

A large number of people gathered at the spot and protested against the concerned temple committee officials responsible for digging the pit and leaving it abandoned without taking up the construction work.

A complaint has been lodged against a committee member on the statement of the victim's mother.
