Police said that Lalawmpuia was drowned in the river Mat after he and his five friends tried to save Hmangaihzuali (13) who was drowning while swimming in the river.
While Hmangaihzuali and other friends could make it safely to the banks, Lalawmpuia was swept away by strong waves into the deeper part of the river and drowned as he was too weak to swim towards the banks.
His body was recovered about an hour after the incident by swimmers from a nearby village.
