A 16-year-old boy was today electrocuted to death in Brar Gadi village of the district, following which locals blocked the Jammu-Sringar National Highway, protesting against the alleged negligence of the state power department.

The boy, Riyaz Ahmed Lone, was killed and four others received burn injuries this morning due to electrocution when they reportedly touched electric appliances during a power surge, a police official said.

The incident occurred allegedly after the power department increased the electricity supply in domestic lines to 440 Volts from the normal 220 Volts. Later, the residents came out on roads and blocked the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway for over two hours in protest against the power department, he said.

The protestors were pacified only after senior officers from the police and district administration intervened and assured them of action against the guilty, the official said.

A case has also been registered and investigation initiated, he said.
