A four-year-old boy was killed after being hit by a garbage van hired by a civic body in Khajuri Khas area of northeast Delhi, police said today.

Rehan was hit by the auto-tipper (garbage pick-up van) hired by East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) between 10 to 11 AM yesterday when he was playing on the street. He was rushed to GTB Hospital where he succumbed to injuries late in the evening, they said.

The driver, Jagnal Singh, is on the run and police is on the lookout for him. A case under section 304(A) (causing death by negligence) has been registered against him, said DCP (northeast) A K Singla.

Rehan's father Janu, a labourer, was working nearby when the incident happened, police said.

The EDMC, on its part, has initiated an inquiry in the case.

East Delhi Mayor Satya Sharma said, "The concessionaire which runs the garbage collection service for the EDMC has said that they will produce the driver soon."

"I have already asked the Deputy Commissioner of the area to look into the case," she said.
