British-Indian filmmaker Asif Kapadia says presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump should be boycotted.

"Boycott Donald Trump. If he was president, I wouldn't be allowed into the US. Nor would the new mayor of London Sadiq Khan," said the Oscar-winning filmmaker, who was raised Muslim.

The "Amy" helmer, 43, made the commens during the director panel at the 7th annual Winston Baker Film Finance Forum in Cannes.

Trump had controversially claimed Muslims should be temporarily banned from entering the US. His comments on Mexicans had also generated a similar kind of controversy.

Kapadia, however, feels there is "an interesting Trump movie to be made."

"But at the moment it is a tragedy. ... And I don't think he needs any more attention," he added.

Kapadia will next work on a feature documentary on soccer star Diego Maradona and a film "Silver Ghost", about the founders of Rolls Royce, which he will direct with Martin Scorsese producing it.
