Mobile Internet services were today temporarily suspended in Kashmir to check rumour-mongering after several cases of vigilante violence related to braid- chopping were reported in the Valley, officials said.

The services were snapped for a few hours during the day, but were restored by evening.

Separatists had also called for protests against braid- chopping incidents. Several groups protested in the Valley over the incidents.

The increasing number of braid-chopping incidents over the past few days have forced people to undertake vigilante actions. In some cases, though, innocents had to suffer at the hands of the mob.

An elderly man died in Anantnag district after a youth hit him with a stone, mistaking him for a braid-chopper.

In another case, a young boy was beaten up in Delina area of Baramulla district this week. People suspected him to be a braid-chopper but he was in the area meet his girlfriend.

Two women were thrashed at a wedding feast on similar suspicion in Baba Demb area of the city.
