'Brain dead' man provides life to six people

A 'brain dead' man today provided a new lease of life to six persons after his organs were harvested and transplanted on them.

R Padmanabhan (44) of Singanallur area here suffered a serious head injury on January 13 when his two-wheeler collided with another motorcycle.

He was immediately rushed to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital and later shifted to the private K G Hospital here.

Despite best attempts by doctors to save him, Padmanabhan was declared 'brain dead' yesterday at 10.35 AM. The second declaration of brain death was made at 4.45 PM, Hospital chairman Dr G Bakthavatsalam said in a release today.
 

As his relatives expressed willingness to donate the organs, multi-organ harvesting was performed.

One kidney each was donated to K G Hospital and MIOT Hospital, Chennai, the liver to Kovai Medical Centre and Hospital here, heart valves to Fortis Malar Hospital, Chennai and eyes to Aravind Eye Hospital here, Bhakthavatsalam said.

Padmanabhan is survived by his wife and a daughter, a seventh standard student.
