The West Bengal Assembly today passed a Bill for setting of the private Brainware University at Barasat in North 24-Parganas district.

The Brainware University Bill, 2015 was moved in the House considering the growing need for quality facilities in higher education and to encourage private investment in the state's higher education system, state Higher Education minister Partha Chatterjee said.

The Bill was passed in the House even as a section of the Opposition raised questions about the need of such private universities in West Bengal.

The feasibility of the proposal for setting up the Brainware University has been examined by a committee headed by Vice-Chairman of the West Bengal State Council of Higher Education and it has recommended establishment of the proposed private varsity, he said.

Since the university will be funded by a sponsoring trust, the state government would have no financial liability in giving effect to the provisions of the Bill, the minister added.
