Police in Rio de Janeiro say they've detained several of their own officers for an incident in which police apparently fired at a car and killed five young men.

Local news media say the dead were aged 16 to 25 and included two brothers. The O Dia newspaper says the men from the Morro da Lagartixa slum were out celebrating the 16-year-old's first paycheck.

Rio police say an unidentified number of police have been taken into custody following yesterday's shooting. They could face criminal charges and could also be removed from the force.

Police violence remains a major problem in Brazil. A report by the independent Brazil Forum of Public Security found that killings by police officers are the second cause of violent deaths in the country.
