The once powerful speaker of Brazil's lower house of Congress Eduardo Cunha was sentenced today to 15 years in prison for corruption.
The sentence, detailed in a court document signed by leading anti-corruption judge Sergio Moro, was a landmark in Brazil's ongoing struggle with rampant high-level embezzlement and bribery.
Until his arrest last year, Cunha was one of the most influential politicians in Brazil and an architect of the impeachment of leftist president Dilma Rousseff.
