Prince Harry made a private visit to MI6 headquarters here and was briefed on the jihadist threat after fellow soldier was hacked to death on a London street last month, according to British media reports.

Agents from Britain's Secret Intelligence Service, commonly referred to as MI6 (Military Intelligence, Section 6), briefed the third in line to the throne as he toured the spy HQ in Vauxhall, south London, on Monday.

"Prince Harry paid a private visit to the secret intelligence service on Monday," a spokesperson for St James' Palace said.

The visit comes days after a man believed to be a white Muslim convert, Ashraf Islam, admitted making threats to kill the 28-year-old prince soon after the London terror attack on Lee Rigby in Woolwich, south-east London, on May 22.

It is believed the prince, who is a captain in the Army Air Corps and has served twice in Afghanistan, was given a detailed briefing on terror threats, security issues at home and current MI6 operations.

"He was briefed on the jihadist threat. Harry described the death of Drummer Rigby as "truly shocking" and "a tragedy".

Prince Harry is thought to have attended the briefing in his role as a royal rather than an army officer.

He was invited last year and finally attended after months of planning.
