With Indian students forming an important segment of international students studying in the UK, Britain aims to make India the largest recipient of its global scholarship programme-Chevening scholarships- over the next two years, Mei Key Barker, Director South India, British Council, today said.

The British Council is keen to encourage greater student mobility and exchange of students between India and the UK to build deeper relationship, she said at a press conference.

"The UK welcomes all legitimate international students. More than 2.5 lakh Indians have studied in the UK during the last ten years," she said.

A seminar, titled 'the GREAT UK Education Seminar' would be held here tomorrow by the British Council to provide information on student life and culture for Indian students aspiring to study in the UK.

Andrew Soper, the Minister Counsellor (Political and Press) in the British High Commission, New Delhi, said the UK and India shared "a well established, broad ranging and expanding partnership on education."

"With 401 scholarships this year and more than 750 scholarships during the last two years the Great Britain Scholarships-India 2015 is the largest ever scholarships programme offered to Indian students," he said. The scholarships were worth around 1.51 million pounds.

He said in addition to this, the UK would quadruple its funding for the Chevening scholarships for Indian students during the next two years "making India the largest recipient in the world at large."

The British Council has also announced a new programme called 'Generation UK' which aims at bringing upto 25,000 UK students to India over the next five years.
