A mysterious masked crusader dubbed as the "Bromley Batman", wearing black combat trousers and a muscle top, has been foiling mugging bids by knife-wielding thugs in London before vanishing into darkness.

A number of witnesses say the crime-fighter is confronting muggers and knife-wielding gangs across the streets of south London specially Bromley in recent weeks.

Descriptions of the unidentified figure paint him as a masked man in his thirties with a "well-groomed beard", who maybe trained in martial arts.

In the first incident, the victim identified only as Ken was walking through Martin's Hill area when the foul-mouthed thugs "came out of nowhere" and demanded his phone and wallet.

"I thought I was quite literally done for. Then, out of nowhere, a man about 6ft tall, dressed in black combat-style trousers and a tight muscle top, and wearing a black bandana mask, came running towards them," Ken was quoted as saying by the Evening Standard newspaper.

"He kicked the biggest of my attackers to the ground, which must have knocked the wind out of him. Then he grabbed one of the others and swung him into the other one, and pushed them both into a prickly hedge. They were both screaming in pain," the victim said.

Two others have since told similar stories about the masked man, the Daily Express reported.

In nearby Penge area, also in south London, someone saw him confront a group attacking a man.

He said the masked crusader attacked the men and got one of them in a ninja-style armlock, before the gang -- and the vigilante -- all fled.

Ken wants to track down the mysterious Batman-like vigilante so he can thank him properly for intervening and saving him from getting mugged last week.
