Shields, 46, will portray the role of Chris MacNeil, the mother of demonically possessed child Regan, while Richard Chamberlain, 78, will be seen as Father Merrin in the creepy new adaptation, reported Los Angeles Times.
In the original cult film, Ellen Burstyn and Max von Sydow starred in the lead roles.
"The play will use 'minor' special effects. The movie version of the book featured elaborate scenes of the possessed girl spewing green vomit and levitating in the air," said playwright John Pielmeier.
