The presence of displaced Bru community, staying in evacuee camps in Tripura since past 16 years, has given rise to socio-economic and law and order problem in the state, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar said today.
"40,000 displaced people from Mizoram are staying in evacuee camps in Tripura for the last 16 years which led to socio-economic and law and order problems in the state. We want they should be taken back as early as possible," Sarkar told reporters.
He alleged that the state government had many times put forth before the Centre the demanded for repatriation of the Brus (who are called Reangs in Tripura), but no effective measures were taken for their return.
Sarkar said, he also raised the issue on April 15 at the meeting of the administrative reforms in Delhi in presence of union Home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde.
The Bru people had crossed the Mizoram border and took shelter in Tripura's North district since 1997 following ethnic clashes with the Mizos over dispute of lands and identities.
There were at least 13 rounds of talks between the Brus, Mizoram government and the Central government for their return and a few evacuees also returned to their ancestral lands but later many of them came back to Tripura again.
