A suspected Pakistani militant guide was shot dead by BSF troops today near the International Border in Jammu, foiling an infiltration bid possibly by two ultras.

Pakistani currency notes, Pakistani cigarette packets, eatables, two knifes, a cutter, some Urdu newspapers, visiting card of Sialkote, a booklet and diary in Chinese language, and a leaflet of a Chinese newspaper etc were recovered from the possession of the intruder whose identify could not be established immediately, a senior BSF officer said.

"Early this morning at 0418 hours, it was observed that one person from Pakistan side suspiciously crossed the IB and moved ahead taking advantage of dead ground, thick growth, dark hours and fog," the officer said.

On observing the suspicious movement close to forward BSF sentry post ahead of fence, the alert BSF sentry challenged the intruder, he said.

"Instead of surrendering, the intruder tried to rush towards one of the culverts under the fence. As the intruder had covered his face and body with a shawl, the sentry got suspicious and shot at him dead," the officer said.

He said "at the same time, a suspicious movement of two more persons was observed in the rear on Pakistani Bundh waiting for some signal from the intruder. Immediately after the intruder being fired by BSF sentry, both persons waiting in the rear side were seen hiding themselves behind Pakistani side bundh."

The officer said the intruder seemed to be operating as a guide to the militants waiting for the signal. "The area was immediately kept under cover of fire and observation and search was started after the day break," he said.

"Identification of intruder could not be established. Efforts are on to hand over the dead body to Pakistani Rangers if they accept," he added.

D K Upadhyaya, IG BSF, Jammu Frontier, B S Kasana, DIG, Dharmendra Pareek, DIG (G) Bhagwant Singh Comdt BSF visited the site to take a stock of the situation.

IG BSF appreciated the action and alertness of the troops giving special acknowledgement to the sentry performing the said action.

Addressing the troops, the IG said "national security is our paramount concern and nobody can be permitted to obviate with it.
