BSNL subscriber base raised in Assam circle

BSNL Assam Circle has added 14,199 landline, 11,842 Broadband, 1,484 WLL and 2,736 Wi-MAX connections in the state last fiscal, a top official of the public sector telecom service provider said today.

Giving an account of the Circle's achievements and future plans, its Chief General Manager M K Seth said BSNL during the period set up 500 mobile exchanges, with plan for another 200 this year and added 2,79,577 mobile connections.

He said 147 kms optical fibre cables (OFC) were laid, another 422 kms OFC is planned, besides setting up Wi-Fi Hot Spots at prominent locations.

National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN) work was being done in 91 Blocks in 18 districts of Assam in Phase-I, 1955 kms of Permanently Lubricated Pipes (PLB) and 1,763 kms of OFC laid, besides testing end to end Optical Fibre in 589 Gram Panchayats, Seth said.
 

Altogether 27 Optical Line Terminals (OLT) were installed, 198 Optical Network Terminal (ONT) installed in 198 GPs, PLB laying completed in 768 GPs, OFC laying done in 684 GPs, besides covering 1010 GPs during 2016-17, he said.

The CGM also said BSNL was the official Telecom Service provider for the 12th South Asian Games held in February at Guwahati and Shillong.

BSNL has provided network connectivity and is rendering day to day maintenance of the all important National Register of Citizens updation project in Assam, Seth said.

Providing network connectivity to around 200 Veterinary hospitals and offices across Assam for the National Animal Disease Reporting System) project, he said BSNL has established WiFi connectivity to Guwahati High Court and airports of Dibrugarh, Silchar, Imphal, Dimapur and Agartala.

BSNL has also provided network connectivity to around 1200 Government Schools and very high speed connectivity to six Universities/NIT of Assam.

Stating BSNL has also made a giant stride in the cloud computing arena, the CGM said cloud computing services was extended for NRC project, IIT-Guwahati, Assam Government's Finance Department and Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital here.

BSNL has also extended network connectivity to all the PSU Banks, Insurance Companies and various state government departments in Assam.

Plans were afoot also to provide network connectivity to almost all the offices of the state with the help of National Informatics Centre (NIC), Seth added.
