A BSP candidate from Moradabad allegedly attacked police and obstructed voting at a polling booth here following which he was booked for the offence, police said today.

The accused Haji Yakub Qureshi, a former minister and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate attacked the police team deployed at the polling booth numbers 176 and 177 in the Meerut-Hapur Lok Sabha area yesterday, Inspector Subhash Rana said.

Qureshi also accused the security forces of acting as per the directions of the Samajwadi Party (SP), he said adding, police later took the situation in control.

The candidate has been booked under various sections of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), police said.

Yakub denied the charges and accused the police and the administration of registering a false case against him on the orders of the SP government, when contacted by PTI over phone.

He said that he had gone to the polling booth to cast his vote and only raised his voice against usage of lathis by the police on innocent people. He vehemently denied the attack on the police team.
