Besides Bhattacharjee, Left Front chairman Biman Bose, West Bengal Opposition Leader Surya Kanta Mishra, former state industry minister Nirupam Sen and party Central Committee member Md Salim were also retained, party sources said.

Two new-faces were also inducted in the 17-member body.

A former CPI(M) MP from Jadavpur constituency Sujan Chakraborty and the party's Bankura district secretary Amiya Patra were the two new faces in the secretariat, the sources said.

Bhattacherjee who has not been attending the politburo meetings in the recent past after the party's electoral debacle in West Bengal, however, participated in the two-today meeting of state committee which formed the secretariat.

Bhattacherjee was recently retained as the CPI(M) Politburo member despite his absence in the 20th party Congress at Kozhikode due to health problems.

Veteran party leader Benoy Konar who was elected as chairman of the five-member CPI(M) central control commission recently was dropped from the state secretariat apparently due to his age.

The CPI(M) leader and former Land Reforms minister Rezzak Mollah, who had been vocal since long against the former Front government's "faulty land acquisition and industrial policy" and had earlier openly criticised the former chief minister and the industry minister, was conspicuous by his absence at the state committee meeting.

Asked about non-inclusion of Mollah, Sujan Chakraborty told reporters that he was not keeping good health.

Mollah told reporters, "They have not considered me to be competent and that is why they have not included me"
