Trinamool Congress today hit back at former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee for his remark that had he been the CM, TMC leader Anubrata Mandal had been in jail and said if that was so then many CPI(M) leaders should have been imprisoned during his tenure.

"Buddhadeb and Surjya Kanta Mishra had both made objectionable comments. Were they sent to jail? Did Buddhadeb himself walk into jail after making those comments," TMC leader Partha Chatterjee told reporters.

He said many other Left leaders like Anil Basu and Binoy Dutta had made very objectionable comments in their speeches and had even made personal attacks, both verbal and physical, against party supremo Mamata Banerjee.

"I would like to remind Buddhadeb that charity begins at home. It is their policy to attack Mamata Banerjee in whatever way they can," Chatterjee said.

At a rally in Naihati yesterday, Bhattacharjee had strongly criticised Banerjee's bid to shield her party leader Anubrata Mondal and even sharing dais with him during campaign.

He had said if he was the Chief Minister, Mondal would have been sent to jail.

Mondal, Birbhum district president of TMC and the party's observer for Burdwan, had threatened to chop off the hands of Congress workers if they tried to damage hoardings of the Chief Minister or party flags in November last year during a party programme in Katwa.

He had also courted controversy during the last panchayat elections for his hate speech when he had asked party supporters to burn the houses of independent candidates (dissident Trinamool supporters) and hurl bombs at policemen if they went to rescue them.
