Budget: Water Resources Ministry allocated Rs 6,201.21 cr

The Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Ministry has been allotted Rs 6,201.21 crore in the 2016-17 budget, a substantial increase of Rs 1,969.21 crore over previous fiscal.

Presenting the Union budget today, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley allocated Rs 6,201.21 crore to the Water Resources Ministry, of which Rs 5500 crore was under plan head and the rest under non-plan head.

The Ministry has been given Rs 2250 crore for implementing the ambitious Namami Gange project.

Besides, the Finance Minister made a provision of Rs 1,877.13 crore for Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojna (PMKYS).

Simultaneously a major programme for sustainable management of ground water resources has been prepared with an estimated cost of Rs 6,000 crore for multilateral funding has been proposed, Jaitley said during his speech.
 

Apart from this, for the purpose of water resources management which also includes research and development programme, the government has allotted Rs 660.27 crore.

The budget provisions include Rs 259.60 crore for river basin management which includes works like inter-linking of rivers and flood forecasting.
