Two men who fled with a buffalo from a village in neighboring Rajasthan are suspected to have drowned in the Chambal river, police said today.
The bodies have not been found yet but the police said the two men, who are missing for the last four days, possibly stole the buffalo from Amitwali village in Rajasthan, and were taking it to Rithoura village in Morena district of Madhya Pradesh.
Ambah police station incharge K K Khaneja said the men seemed to have put their mobile phone and Rs 565 in a polythene bag which they tied to the horns of the buffalo and tried to swim across by holding on to the buffalo's tail.

The buffalo might have kicked or shrugged them off, leading to the death of the two men by drowning, he said.
The buffalo crossed the river safely and was found by the villagers on the other side of the river after which they informed the police.
Police traced the owner of the mobile to Rithoura village where they found out that two men, who had past record of buffalo thefts, were missing since September 23.
Police therefore suspect that the duo were crossing the river with the stolen animal and drowned.
The buffalo was returned to its owner Antar Singh Lodhi from Dihouli in Rajasthan. Search is on to find the bodies of the two men.
