A 37-year-old builder from Thane district of Maharashtra had a close shave when he was allegedly fired upon by a gang Saturday night, the police said Sunday.

Police suspect professional rivalry to be the cause behind the firing.

The incident occurred near a dhaba at Ane village in Shahapur taluka of the district.

"Six persons came on motorcycles and some of them fired a few shots aiming the builder Rajesh Gaikar. However, Gaikar had a miraculous escape, as he ducked," a police official said.

Gaikar and the accused are residents of Ane village, he said.

Police have registered an FIR under various sections of the IPC and Arms Act, the official said, adding that they are yet to make any arrests.

Gaikar is reportedly associated with a political party, but police have not confirmed this.
