/ -- The Master of Urban Design at Anant National University hosted a three-day event comprising of a hands-on workshop and panel discussion on 'Building Resilient Cities.' The workshop was facilitated by the Urban Resilience Unit within the National Institute of Urban Affairs. This event attempted to incite professionals, academicians, government officials, and students towards resilient urban solutions and aimed to highlight key efforts that are being made at all levels (global, national, and local) and across Social, Economic and Environmental Resilience.
On the first day, the participants were introduced to a resilience framework of the 100 Resilience Cities initiative and the four categories for review - Health & Wellbeing, Infrastructure & Environment, Economy & Society, and Leadership & Strategy - along with 12 parameters that needed to be evaluated in order to understand the issues and challenges. They were also exposed to the relevance of shocks and stresses to be considered to build day-to-day resilience.
For the next phase, the participants were divided into two groups for working at the neighbourhood level and city level respectively. The groups were expected to assess the shocks and stresses and suggest strategic design interventions to overcome them while also addressing the city's vision.
On the third day, a panel discussion was organised with a diverse team of experts including Mr M N Ashish Ganju, Senior Architect, Urbanist and Academician; Mr P L Sharma, Chief Town Planner, GTPVD, Government of Gujarat; Dr Umamaheshwaran Rajasekar, Chair Urban Resilience - NIUA; and Dr Suresh Rohilla, Programme Director, Center for Science and Environment. The panel discussed the challenges across various verticals like social cohesion, environment, institutional framework, etc. towards building city resilience.
The experts concluded the event by reviewing the design interventions conceptualised by the participants of the workshop.
