"We got back 399 acre of land at Bhasapool under Galsi II block and included it in the Land Bank being set up by the state government," District Magistrate Omkar Singh Meena said here today.
The administration found the stretch of land recently during its search for vested lands to be included in the Land Bank, Meena said.
Deep Sengupta, the block land revenue officer concerned, said he had heard that the land had been acquired about 10 years ago by a pharmaceutical company to grow medicinal plants.
However, no document about the handover was found with the BLRO office or with the local panchayat, he said.
Sunil Bagdi, the pradhan of Gohgram panchayat run by the Trinamool Congress, echoed Sengupta.
Swapan Debnath, Minister of State for Micro Small-Scale Enterprises and Textiles and Land, said a probe would be ordered to find out how the 'illegal' transaction was made during the Left Front regime and who were involved.
