Burglars last night broke into State Bank of India, Rajnagar branch and ran away with Rs 2.89 lakh cash, the police said today.

According to the police, a group of burglars numbering about five made their way inside the bank after breaking open the iron gate at the rear side using gas cutters and other equipment to execute the crime, they said.

"The gang tried to break open the iron chest containing the cash reserve, but failed in their bid," said Rajnagar police station Inspector, Bijoy Kumar Mallik.

"Later they chanced upon a box which carried the cash. The crime was committed last night. It was an organised crime having expertise in committing such offences. A search is on to trace the criminals," Mallik added.
