The National Human Rights Commission has sought a report from the UP government over burn injuries sustained by a student from getting electric shocks while allegedly washing mid-day meal utensils at a government school in neighbouring Hapur district.

Taking suo motu cognisance of a media report in this regard, the commission issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Principal Secretary of the state's Education Department, saying, it amounted to "gross violation" of human rights.

"A student of a government-run school Malviya Pathshala in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh became unconscious after getting electric shock from a hand pump while washing mid-day meal utensils on August 1," the commission said.

Two students of the school have alleged that on the order of the teachers, they have been "washing utensils daily", it said.

Reportedly, the electric current passed to the hand pump through a stray wire of an electric pole and the student was rushed to a government hospital when other children raised an alarm.
