A woman farm labourer was charred to death and another one was critically injured in a major fire that engulfed a huge agriculture field in Dehri Shivkala village in Raisen district today, a Revenue department official said.

According to the official, two farmers burned stubble after harvesting wheat crop, which soon engulfed the standing crop in nearby farms as well.

"Two women farm labourers sustained burn injuries after they got trapped in the blaze that spread over about 200 acres. One of the injured labourers died later in the Badi Health Centre," Badi Tehsildar Ashok Sen said, adding that the deceased is identified as Dhanvanti Bai Kewat.

Another woman was referred to Hamdia Hospital for further treatment.

More than five fire tenders are still struggling to put out the flames that have spread in neighbouring farms.

"We have called the fire tenders from nearest towns including Badi, Bareli, Udaypura, Raisen and Obedullahganj. These fire tenders are still working to control the blaze," he added.

District Collector Bhavna Valimbe announced a financial assistance to the family members of the deceased woman after visiting the spot.

A case has been registered against two farmers who had allegedly burned stubble, said Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) DS Tomar.
