A man, suspected to be involved in the killing of a bus passenger in Virudhanagar district, today surrendered before a Judicial Magistrate Court here.

Mohammed Rafique was remanded in judicial custody for 15 days by the Magistrate Gayathri Devi, police said.

Karuppasamy, aged around 25, who was travelling in a government bus bound for Coimbatore was shot dead by an unidentified gang following an altercation near Sattur in Virudhanagar district yesterday.

When the co-passengers raised an alarm, the gang members jumped out of the bus and escaped.

Nine persons were detained in connection with the incident, police said.

Police said preliminary investigations revealed that Rafique's son Abdullah was murdered a few months ago and Karuppasamy's brothers were arrested in connection with that.

Police suspected that Rafique could have hired the gang to kill Karuppasamy to avenge the murder of his son.

Rafique was absconding since yesterday, police said.
