Expressing concern over deteriorating journalistic values, former Media Advisor of Prime Minister and senior journalist Harish Khare today said the values should be restored so that media can effectively play its role in assisting people to "choose ideas and ideals".

"In today's world, social and cultural values are market driven. Businessman has become a journalist and journalist has become a businessman. Politicians are running newspapers and journalists are also indulging in politics. In this scenario, expansion of business has become the new benchmark of journalism," he said.

Speaking at the Pandit Jhabarmal Memorial Award ceremony here organized by vernacular daily Rajasthan Patrika, Khare said, "Journalism is a responsible profession and a journalist assists the society in choosing ideas and ideals. We tell the society what is worth knowing but things have changed over the last few years."

Khare, Editor-in-Chief of the Tribune Newspaper, said that the relation between a newspaper and its reader was unique and the credibility in that relationship should be maintained.

In his address, Director of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Jodhpur, Sanjeev Mishra said that the newly established institution would help cater to medical needs of people in western parts of the state.

MLA Ghanshyam Tiwari, former minister B K Sharma, former Mayor Jyoti Khandelwal and others were present on the occasion.
