Businessman gets 7 years' RI for rape

A businessman was sentenced to seven years rigorous imprisonment by a fast track court here for raping a woman last year.

While sentencing Rabindra Pradhan, Additional Sessions Judge Anand Narayan Moharana also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on him.

Out of the fine amount, Rs 15,000 would be paid as compensation to the victim, a self help group (SHG) member.

In the event of non-payment of the fine, the convict would have to undergo additional jail term for three months, the judge said in his order yesterday.

According to the prosecution, the businessman raped the woman in a deserted place near Tikiripada village when she was returning from an SHG meeting in the evening of April 16, 2013.
 

The woman lodged an FIR at Phulbani Sadar police station the next day. Police arrested Pradhan the next day.
