A 32-year-old businessman had a close shave after the Audi car he was driving suddenly caught fire and was gutted within seconds near the Peeragarhi flyover in northwest Delhi today.

Kapil Agarwal, who owns a jewellery store, was travelling from outer Delhi's Rohini to his residence in west Delhi's Paschim Vihar area in the wee hours when he saw smoke emanating from the bonnet of his car.

He pulled over and stepped out of the vehicle. When the opened the lid of the bonnet, he saw flames and within minutes the car was gutted, a police official said.

Agarwal called up the police control room, following which teams were sent to the spot and fire tenders pressed into service.

He told the police that he had taken the Audi A4 for servicing in January and the vehicle had no problems.

The matter is being looked into but no case has been registered yet, the official added.
